Youngins is the third hit show the International Emmy-nominated team of Tshedza Pictures (The River, Champions) has created for Showmax following the success of Adulting and Outlaws. The company also recently announced that a second season will be coming soon.
“Youngins is a show written by young writers who live the true authentic lives of the viewers. This show is an unvarnished view of a generation that is defining itself right before our eyes.” – Series director Themba Mfebe
The cast of the new telenovela includes Ayakha Ntunja (MTV Shuga, Intlawulo), Kealeboga Masango (Rhythm City), Toka Mtabane (Five Fingers for Marseilles), Thabiso Ramotshela (The River) and newcomer Lebohang Lephatsoana. SAFTA winner Loyiso MacDonald (The Queen) also stars as Principal Mthembu.
“It’s a clear depiction of how teenagers are navigating through high school, especially with the easy access and influence of technology these days. It also highlights the dynamics of friendships and relationships between teenagers and their parents. It’s also a funny show, with many comedic moments that we've seen trend on social media. I’ve had to hold back my laughter because of how funny these characters are.” – Kealeboga Masango speaking with News 24.
The BBC’s Aaron Akinyemi praised the show as “a wild ride full of fun, danger, sex and violence.” The show has also been described as a “nerve-wracking drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat” by City Press’ Thapelo Ramorobi.
