Please note that The Girl from St Agnes is only for sale in Africa: This fantastic eight-part mystery drama will fill any whodunnit slot. Dark secrets are revealed when a tragic event at an elite boarding school sets off a search for the truth.
The series follows feisty drama teacher Kate Ballard as she struggles to come to terms with the mysterious death of one of her students, Lexi. Kate soon finds that the upmarket school is hiding secrets. Not convinced by the official version that Lexi committed suicide, Kate decides to search for the truth herself.
There is an excellent showcase of acting talent in the series. Led by Nina Milner; 24 Hours To Live star Tyrone Keogh; District 9 and Chappie actor Robert Hobbs, who received a SAFTA Best Actor in a TV Drama nomination for his role; as well as Monte Carlo Best Actor finalist Graham Hopkins from The Lab. Tessa Jubber will be recognised from international series Wallander.
Not only will the twists and turns in the story keep the audience engaged but the relatable characters are what they will empathise with. These include Lexi, who is an outgoing and popular 17-year-old girl. She is good at manipulating those around her and even though she displays a tough exterior she is seriously grappling with her own identity. Then we have Kate, who doesn’t come from the elite world where the school is set but that is exactly what endears her to her students.
The series has been compared to Thirteen Reasons Why and proved extremely popular, becoming the most-watched South African or international series on Showmax, on its release in January 2019. It also received 3 nominations at the 2020 SAFTA’s including for Best Actor, Best Scriptwriting and Best Original Score in a TV Drama. The Girl from St Agnes also successfully turns a light on the teenage psyche and audiences are asked to consider their own stereotypes and assumptions within the framework of an appealing murder mystery. This mystery drama will entertain any fan of the genre and is definitely binge-worthy.
