The Silwerskerm Awards celebrates the best in Afrikaans content and takes place after the ever-growing South African film festival, Silwerskermfees.
Showmax’s hit drama Koek was the big winner in the TV drama categories with four awards celebrating the show’s impressive cast. This included Best actor (Jacques Bessenger), Best actress (Cindy Swanepoel), Best male supporting actor (Dawid Minnaar), and Best female supporting actor (Sandra Prinsloo).
Som van Twee, which premiered at this year’s Silwerskermfees, won an incredible seven awards, including Best feature film. Simoné Pretorius (Hartklop, Wonderlus, Hotel) also won awards for Best direction and Best screenplay for her very first feature film as writer and director.
Popular TV personality and chef Bertus Basson won Best presenter (reality programme) for In Die Sop and legendary presenter and producer Rian van Heerden won Best presenter (entertainment programme) for the Afrikaans version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Elsewhere, Showmax’s fiery telenovela Wyfie won three awards and the workplace sitcom Taktiek won two awards.
Lifetime achievement awards were given to South African acting legends Hans Strydom (Binnelanders, The Gods Must Be Crazy II, Plek van die Vleisvreters) and Denise Newman (Suidooster, Shirley Adams, Indemnity) as well as producer Roberta Durrant (Krotoa, Arendsvlei, Ring of Lies).
“Film and TV are like two chambers of kykNET's heart,” says Waldimar Pelser, director of M-Net Premium channels. “The one can't be prosperous without the other. To combine these two commercial artistic disciplines at an awards ceremony is not only fantastic but also imperative.”
