The South African rugby team defied all the odds and inspired an entire nation to never give up when they lifted the Rugby World Cup trophy in 2023.
Multichoice has released the eagerly anticipated sequel to Chasing the Sun, which celebrates the Springboks’ record-breaking fourth Rugby World Cup victory. This time, however, the triumph felt even more special because of the team’s resilience and refusal to give up. It was a hard-fought battle and there were many moments where the team faced defeat, only to rise up and snatch victory. Astonishingly, the team won the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final by only one single point, which makes this particular success story unlike any other.
“This story is bigger than rugby,” said Marc Jury, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa. “It is a reflection of what it means to be South African. It's a story of hope, unity, and resilience that connects deeply with our nation's spirit.”
“The Springboks are not just a team; they are a source of national pride and inspiration. Their journey and achievements reflect the strong spirit that exists within us – a spirit of unity, togetherness, and overcoming great odds. Through Chasing the Sun 2, we hope to relive those stirring moments and come together as we did during the tournament in France,” says Rendani Ramovha, SuperSport CEO.
The five-part documentary series takes viewers through every step of the Springboks’ journey to victory with never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and all the biggest moments on the field of play. The project was filmed across multiple countries including New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and of course all over South Africa. The series took nearly two months to shoot and includes extensive interviews with more than 30 players, coaches, pundits, and media figures.
The second instalment of Chasing the Sun is also produced by T+W, who were nominated for an International Emmy last year for Two Sides, the story of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We need as many of us trying to build in this country and that's what the Springboks have shown us." – Gareth Whittaker, Chasing the Sun 2 producer
