This six-part docuseries explores the role of sex in the Afrikaans community with exclusive interviews and a panel of individuals willing to talk about their sex lives openly.
The hit docuseries features interviews with sex workers, adult shop owners, swingers, dominatrixes, a crossdresser, a dungeon master and much more as individuals discuss topics that are seen as highly inappropriate to ever talk about.
Four Afrikaans couples and two singles also partake in a panel discussion with clinical psychologist Bradley R Daniels where they speak about their sex lives freely for the first time and discover more about themselves in the process.
Sex in Afrikaans was released on Valentine’s Day 2022, breaking the record for the most first-day views of any Afrikaans title on the VOD service Showmax ever, ahead of the acclaimed and extremely popular true crime docuseries Devilsdorp.
The show is narrated and produced by media personality and radio host, Rian van Heerden. Van Heerden, who is also the host of the South African adaptation of the popular game show, Who Wants to be a Millionare?, has continuously brought the unconventional to Afrikaans viewers with shows like Karakter, Liefde Sonder Grense and Die Siener. Knowing this show would draw a lot of attention, van Heerden praised those who agreed to feature in the docuseries: “I think that every person who participated is a pioneer and is very brave indeed.”
Channel24's Gabi Zietsman gave Sex in Afrikaans five stars and called it “an incredibly brave show” as well as “a great conversation starter, especially for anyone who doesn't know how to start those talks with their partners. It creates a safe space both on and off the screen.”
