Op Seer Se Spoor – Revisiting painful memories

2021-07-29 12:04:12

Journalist Ernusta Maralack delves into some of the worst crimes to ever occur in South Africa’s Western Cape province.

Op Seer Se Spoor returns to the scenes of some of the most horrific crimes in South African history in search of answers and how these cases affected the communities in which they occurred. The show features exclusive and often very emotional interviews with family members of the victims, members of the community, and the offenders.

Ernusta Maralack is a journalist and TV personality who has worked for the major South African media outlet, News24 as well as being the editor of the highly popular magazine, Kuier. In an interview with Sarie magazine, Maralack said that it’s an honour to be able to give a voice to those to the victims affected by these crimes and claimed that violence towards women brings out her inner “lioness”.

In 2020, Op Seer Se Spoor won the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) for Best Factual and Educational Programme. The show is produced by Gambit Films, the company behind Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story which won four SAFTAs in 2019, including Best Achievement in Directing in a Feature Film as well as Best Actor and Best Actress in a Featured Film. Gambit Films also produced the hit crime thriller, Nommer 37, which earned director Nosipho Dumisa the Cheval Noir Jury Prize for Best Director at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. Other Gambit Films productions include the highly popular soap, Suidooster and the SAFTA-winning (Best TV Drama) Netflix hit, Blood & Water.

Amazingly, an episode that featured on the show in which Constable Evelyn Pienaar survived being shot six times by her partner inspired the South African Police Service (SAPS) to initiate a new training programme specifically aimed at being proactive rather than reactive in cases involving gender-based violence.

Season 3 of the show is currently in the works and will be added to our extensive library when released.
