The 15th edition of the SAFTAs recently celebrated another exceptional year for African films and television.
Multichoice collected a total of 47 Golden Horns at this year’s ceremony, once again cementing its status as the greatest source of local content.
Last year’s biggest winner, The River (with 10 awards), was the joint most-awarded show of the year, taking home 6 Golden Horns on the night. Sindi Dlathu once again walked away with the award for Best Actress in a Telenovela, reinforcing her dominance in the category and adding to her status as one of the most celebrated South African actors in recent history. Fellow cast member, Meshack Mavuso Magabane, who portrays Nsizwa, won Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela while the show also won Best Achievement in Scriptwriting – Telenovela.
M-Net original, Legacy, made a strong debut at the SAFTAs, equalling The River’s tally of six awards. These awards included Best Telenovela, a category in which The River has dominated in recent years. Celebrated actress, Michelle Botes, won her very first SAFTA as she was awarded Best Supporting Actress – Telenovela for her role as Angelique Price in the hit telenovela. The show also took home a few technical awards, including Best Achievement in Cinematography – Telenovela.
In the film categories, the true-life crime drama, Griekwastad, took the two biggest awards of the night as it was crowned Best Feature Film while the veteran director, Jozua Malherbe, won Best Achievement in Directing – Feature Film.
Still Breathing also shined at its SAFTAs debut, as cast members Kate Liquorish and Brandon Auret won Best Actress and Best Actor – TV Drama respectively.
Menzi Ngubane’s final on-screen performance earned him a posthumous award for Best Actor – Telenovela for his role in Isibaya. Other notable winners on the night include Gomora (Best Achievement in Directing – Telenovela and Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela), June van Merch (winning Best Supporting Actor - TV Drama for her title role in Sara se Geheim), Housekeepers (Best Achievement in Scriptwriting - TV Drama), Chasing the Sun (Best Documentary) and Life With Kelly Khumalo (Best Structured Soapie Reality TV Show).
