Several MultiChoice productions have grabbed the headlines at the 17th South African Film and Television Awards.
The fifth season of the mockumentary-style workplace comedy Hotel is the standout show of 2023 with 13 nominations overall, including Best TV comedy, Best achievement in directing: TV comedy, as well as all four acting categories. Tali's Joburg Diary, the third installment of the hit comedy series, received 8 nominations including Best TV comedy.
The chilling crime thriller Donkerbos is the most-nominated drama show at the 2023 SAFTAs with 7 nominations including the coveted Best TV drama award. The hit show will compete with the likes of Blood Psalms (4 nominations including Best TV drama), Lavish (3 nominations Best TV drama) and Recipes for Love and Murder (3 nominations).
Gaia, which premiered at South by Southwest and won 5 awards at the Silwerskermfees awards last year, is the second most-nominated film with 9 nominations including Best feature film and Best achievement in directing: Feature film.
Legacy and The River both shine in the telenovela categories with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, dominating the Best actor in a telenovela and Best actress in a telenovela category, as well as being up for the Best telenovela award. Elsewhere, Binnelanders and Suidooster have garnered 9 and 8 nominations respectively in the soap categories while Diepe Waters, Gomora, Arendsvlei, DiepCity and The Wife also received multiple nominations.
Steinheist, the Showmax docuseries about one of the biggest corporate scandals in South African history, is up for 4 awards in the documentary categories, including Best made-for-TV documentary and Best achievement in directing: Documentary.
The 17th South African Film and Television Awards will take place at the end of September 2023.
