Lokshin Bioskop provides a platform for South African filmmakers to bring authentic African stories to life. These films are commissioned by Mzansi Magic, the channel behind award-winning TV series such as The Republic, The Queen, Isibaya and The Herd. In recent years, Lokshin Bioskop has grown into a highly popular and recognized brand as well as extending the length of its films. Besides showcasing multiple veteran actors who portray compelling characters that drive these uniquely African stories, the films also provide opportunity for upcoming acting talent in South Africa. Here are some of the notable Lokshin Bioskop films that are available on MultiChoice Studios.

Ibala

Ntombi is married into royalty and is soon expected to produce an heir to carry on the legacy of the Dlamini clan. As expected, she gives birth to a healthy baby boy, but when the community finds out that the baby is born with albinism, the family elders banish her from the village, believing that the baby is cursed. In turn, Ntombi takes on the community in a bid to change their perception and beliefs on the matter.

The film tackles negative cultural beliefs and ingrained stereotypes as well as creates awareness of the historical discrimination that certain people hold towards albinism.

Black Tax

On the outside, Thabo seems to have it all. He has a spacious apartment, drives a nice car and appears to have his life together. What none of his friends know is that he is secretly drowning in debt due to his family responsibilities. The demands keep adding up from more and more extended family members and Thabo is left confused as to how he can manage the situation.

Black Tax represents a common responsibility in African communities where it is seen as a necessity for one’s own wealth and financial gain to be distributed among poorer family members. This film illustrates the crushing stress and negative impact that this traditional expectation can have on those trying to build a better life for themselves.

 Ilungelo

In Ilungelo, a caring and passionate teacher attempts to take on a patriarchal system and a long line of traditions in order to ensure that a very promising student won’t fall victim to a custom called ukuthwala. Ukuthwala is a form of abduction that involves kidnapping a girl or a young woman by a man and his friends or peers with the intention of compelling the girl or young woman's family to endorse marriage negotiations.

Ukuthwala is a tradition that has been spoken out against, but remains a legal practice in South Africa with loads of grey areas. Ilungelo attempts to portray this custom in a brutally honest manner and shows the horrific impact it can have on the lives of young women as well as their families.
