This brand-new drama illustrates the lengths people go to in order to retain or gain vast wealth.
Isibopho explores the unique cultural practice of ungeno, which means that a widow must marry a close relative of her late husband in order to remain in the family. As part of this tradition, Thandi Ndlovu marries her brother-in-law after the death of her husband as well as her father-in-law.
She is however also the beneficiary of the family’s vast inheritance after their deaths, which doesn’t sit well with her new husband and mother-in-law. In time she begins to grow suspicious of the circumstances of the deaths of her late husband and his father and realizes that due to her position within the family, she might also become a target in a bid to gain control of the family’s valuable assets.
The cast is led by Zethu Dlomo, best-known for her role in the international hit Black Sails. She stars alongside Sicelo Dlamini (Isithembiso, Tarzan: The Epic Adventures), Slindile Nodangala (Izulu lami, The Lion King musical), Jerry Mofokeng (Cry, the Beloved Country, Tsotsi, Safe House) and Lerato Makhetha (Isidingo, Generations: The Legacy).
Isibopho marks the very first original drama by the Multichoice channel, Mzansi Wethu.
“Mzansi Wethu has been increasing their offering of brand new, high quality and original content this year. While our new shows have primarily been reality TV-focused, we’re excited to expand our new offering into a different genre. Our audience is versatile and discerning, and we are confident that Isibopho will become a firm viewer favourite,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.
The show is created by former news anchor, Thabile Ngwato and experienced producer Thokozani Nkosi.
Over the course of its 13 episodes, Isibopho offers thrill-a-minute drama you can’t take your eyes off of for a moment, making this show the perfect new addition to any primetime slot.
