This brand-new medical drama is an emotional rollercoaster packed with powerful performances.
Hartklop is a thrilling drama that will excite fans of hit shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, and Chicago Med. The show follows a group of doctors and nurses as they navigate tough relationships, overcome past traumas, and find ways to put their emotions aside to solve complex medical cases and save lives.
The series is written by the SAFTA-nominated screenwriter of The Girl from St. Agnes, Zoë Laband, produced by JP Potgieter of Quizzical Pictures (Reyka, Desert Rose), and directed by Harold Hölscher (Ludik) and Christo Davids (Spoorloos). The interesting cases that feature in Hartklop are based on real stories and a couple of medical anomalies, such as someone becoming intoxicated without drinking alcohol, an instance of terminal lucidity, and much more.
Speaking to News24, series writer Zoë Laband says: “I got so many fascinating and heartbreaking stories, but we also needed to find some humorous stories to balance it out. Because our South African health care system is so challenged, and the doctors and nurses really work against all odds to perform miracles daily, funny stories were quite hard to come by.”
Hartklop also features a stellar cast filled with South African acting icons as well as a couple of breakout stars. This includes legendary SAFTA-nominated actor Dawid Minnaar (Poppie Nongena, Legacy), Leandie du Randt (Donkerbos, The Last Days of American Crime), SAFTA winner Renate Stuurman (The Mating Game, Unmarried), Silwerskermfees award-winner Jacques Bessenger (Donkerbos, Lioness), Marlee van der Merwe (Bloedbroers, Getroud met Rugby), Dawid Louw (Getroud met Rugby, Blood and Glory), Carla Classen (Lioness, Stroomop), Simoné Pretorius (Hotel, Vuil Wasgoed) and newcomer Oros Mampofu.
“The fact that the doctors’ own personal stories play off against the backdrop of the patients’ crises makes the stories dynamic and gives the series natural tension. With Hartklop, it is no different. Each episode has its own drama – for the characters that are part of each episode to the characters that we only see for one or two episodes,” says producer JP Potgieter.
With a relentless pace as well as a healthy mix of comedy and heartbreaking drama, this brand-new show will light up any primetime television slot.
