A housewife discovers that her husband is having an affair and digs deeper until she’s caught up in a different world.
Christelle Smit finds evidence that her husband is cheating on her with a stripper and subsequently leads a drunken investigation into a strip club. As she finds herself in unfamiliar territory, a series of crazy incidents sees her become a stripper herself while also pretending to be an amateur surgeon as part of an organ trafficking syndicate.
“This woman’s life was pretty boring before she was thrown into the criminal underworld and this is a totally crazy reality, but life gets crazy sometimes and anything is really possible.” – Lead actor Cindy Swanepoel speaking with IOL.
“The response to Koek also shows that there is a need for new and different stories and this is a wild one.”
SAFTA-winner Swanepoel (Binnelanders, Fiela se Kind) leads the crime comedy with screen and stage veteran Sandra Prinsloo (Die Seemeeu, Die Verhaal van Racheltjie De Beer), Silwerskerm Festival Prize winner Jacques Bessenger (Warrior, Donkerbos, Hartklop), Ashley de Lange (Kanarie, G.I.L), Stian Bam (Die Verhaal van Racheltjie De Beer, Trompoppie) and two-time SAFTA-winner Vinette Ebrahim.
Koek was written by SAFTA and Silwerskerm-winning director and showrunner Christiaan Olwagen (Kanarie, Die Seemeeu, Recipes for Love & Murder) and directed by SAFTA and Silwerskerm-winning director and cinematographer Johannes Pieter Nel (Magda Louw, Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak).
“I don’t think Christiaan has ever written a weak script, and I immediately knew that this type of story had never been told in Afrikaans,” says Nel. “This made me very excited. It’s funny, it’s sexy and it’s real.
“From the outset, the biggest thing was that it had to be believable. The viewer must be able to believe that something like this can happen.”
Koek offers an explosive blend of drama, crime and comedy to create a truly unique and unpredictable story that will keep viewers glued to the screen.
